Overview of the Technical Extended Range Trimix course

Overview of the Technical Extended Range Trimix course

The SSI Extended Range Trimix Technical Diving Program builds on the skills and techniques learned as an SSI Extended Range Trimix Diver. This extended range diving program pushes you beyond your no-decompression limits, increasing your depth and dive time. The program provides avid underwater explorers with the training they need to independently plan and conduct unlimited decompression dives with mixed gases to a maximum depth of 200 feet (50 meters).

✅ Duration: 4 days
✅ Number of dives: pool session + 6 dives
✅ Max depth: 60 m
✅ Equipment: Twinset or Sidemount
✅ Included: elearning
❗ Min age: 18 years
❗ Requirements: Extended Range or Full Cave Diving or Technical Wreck Diving; 70 logged dives (at least 20 logged dives deeper than 30 meters; 10 dives requiring staged decompression with at least one gas switch, not including training dives)

Course Overview

1. Theory

Advanced Trimix Theory: Detailed understanding of trimix gas blends for deep diving, including managing high helium percentages to reduce narcosis and the risks of high-pressure nervous syndrome (HPNS).
Complex Dive Planning: Learn to plan multi-level dives with multiple gas switches, extended bottom times, and staged decompression stops. Use advanced dive planning software and dive computers tailored for deep technical diving.
Gas Management: Techniques for managing gas consumption across multiple cylinders, ensuring sufficient reserves for long, deep dives. Understand contingency planning for gas supply issues.
Dive Physiology: Explore the physiological effects of deep diving, including helium’s impact on the body, oxygen toxicity management, and decompression stress at extreme depths.
Decompression Theory: Advanced decompression models and gradient factors specific to deep trimix diving, including strategies for minimizing decompression time while ensuring safety.

2. Practical Skills

Advanced Equipment Configuration: Set up and use complex equipment systems for deep technical diving, including multiple stage cylinders, advanced dive computers and redundant systems for safety.
Gas Switching: Master safe gas switching techniques under extreme conditions to manage narcosis and oxygen toxicity at depth.
Buoyancy and Trim Control: Perfect advanced buoyancy and trim control techniques to manage multiple cylinders and execute precise decompression stops in deep water.
Problem Management: Develop strategies for handling emergencies at extreme depths, including managing equipment failures, gas supply problems, and lost decompression stops.

3. Dives

Pool/confined water dive: Conduct an initial deep trimix dive to apply theoretical knowledge and basic skills in a controlled deep environment.
Dives 1 and 2: Dives within the no-decompression limits focusing on gas management, complex gas switching and advanced buoyancy control.
Dive 3 and 4: Decompression dives with the cumulative time of at least 3 hours and with at least 2 gas switches. Total time of all decompression stops including deep stops will be up to 30 min.
Dive 5 and 6: Optional dive to reinforce skills and handle specific scenarios like emergency gas switches or lost decompression stops. Total time of all decompression stops including deep stops will be up to 60 min.

After completing this course, your next step in technical diving will be Hypoxic Trimix Diver course.
