Overview of the Extended Range Trimix course

The SSI Extended Range Trimix Diver course is an advanced technical diving program that focuses on using trimix (a blend of oxygen, nitrogen and helium) to reduce narcosis and increase safety during deep dives. This program is ideal for divers who want to expand their exploration capabilities and gain the skills and knowledge necessary to technical dive to depths of 45 meters/150 feet. You will develop skills in planning and executing technical trimix dives, increase safety awareness and introduce advanced breathing gas management techniques. Participants will learn how to effectively use gas mixtures such as helium, oxygen, and nitrogen to minimize the risk of nitrogen narcosis and oxygen toxicity at greater depths.

Course Overview

1. Theory

Trimix Fundamentals: Understand the properties of trimix gas blends and how they reduce narcosis and improve safety during deep dives.
Advanced Dive Planning: Learn to plan complex dives with multiple gas switches, extended bottom times, and staged decompression stops. Use advanced dive tables, software and dive computers tailored for trimix diving.
Gas Management: Techniques for calculating gas consumption, managing multiple gas cylinders and ensuring sufficient reserves for all phases of the dive.
Dive Physiology: Explore the effects of helium on the body, including managing potential issues like high-pressure nervous syndrome (HPNS).
Decompression Strategies: Understand advanced decompression models, gradient factors and how to use trimix for efficient off-gassing.

2. Practical Skills

Equipment Configuration: Familiarize yourself with the specialized equipment used in trimix diving, including multiple stage cylinders, trimix-compatible regulators and advanced buoyancy control devices.
Gas Switching: Practice safe gas switching techniques at different depths, ensuring proper procedures to avoid oxygen toxicity and narcosis.
Buoyancy Control: Master advanced buoyancy control techniques, crucial for managing multiple cylinders and precise decompression stops.
Problem Management: Learn how to handle potential emergencies, including equipment failures, gas supply issues and diver rescue in deep-water scenarios.

3. Dives

Pool/confined water session: A training dive with a minimum cumulative time of at least two hours and a maximum depth of 12 meters
Open water dives 1 and 2: Perform these 2 dives within the no-decompression limits, focusing on gas management, gas switching, and decompression procedures.
Open water dives 3-6: Deep trimix dives, simulating real-world conditions and demonstrating proficiency in all skills required for extended range diving.

After completing this course your next step in technical diving will be Technical Extended Range Trimix course.
